Implants Flashcards
Is smoking a contraindication? Why?
No. There was at one time a high failure rate in smokers, however there have been better outcomes with newer implants with oxidized surface rather than milled.
Can implants be placed in osteoporotic pts?
Yes with extended healing times
What is the minimum distance between a natural tooth and an implant?
1.5mm
What is the minimum distance btw 2 implants?
2mm
What is type 1 bone? What material is it compared to in terms of drilling?
Thick, dense cortical bone w minimal trabecular bone.
Oak or maplewood
What is type 2 bone? What material is it compared to in terms of drilling?
Thick cortical bone w/ core of dense trabecular bone
White pine or spruce
What is type 3 bone? What material is it compared to in terms of drilling?
Thin cortical bone w/ dense core of dense trabecular bone of favorable strength.
Balsa wood
What is type 4 bone? What material is it compared to in terms of drilling?
Thin layer of cortical bone surrounding low density trabecular bone
Styrofoam
What is the minimum distance from the IA canal should an implant be placed?
2mm
Do antibiotics need to be used in all patients prior to implant placement?
No, not in mild to moderate risk implant pts
What are the 3 loading regimens available for implant loading?
Immediate
Early (6 weeks)
Delayed / conventional (12 weeks)
What are the main causes of early implant failure?
Lack of primary stability (possibly d/t early loading)
Surgical trauma
Infection
Why are early implant infections more problematic than late infection?
Early infection interferes with primary bone healing
Why do textured surface implants have higher success rates than smooth?
It is proposed that the surfaces are better receptors for fibrin strands forming initial attachments to the implant in the micro gap
