Immunodeficiency Flashcards
what is a primary immunodeficiency disease?
congenital, resulting from genetic defects which is inherited
what is a secondary immunodeficiency?
it is acquired, results from other diseases or conditions eg HIV
is genetic inheritance of immunodeficiency generally dominant or recessive?
recessive
how would B cell deficiencies present?
reduced serum Ig levels
absent or reduced follicles and germinal centres in lymphoid organs
how does congenital immunodeficiency tend to present?
-recurrent infection in young person
-allergy
autoimmunity
-cancer
-abnormal lymphocyte proliferation
how would T cell deficiencies present?
-reduced T cell zones in lymphoid organs
-reduced DHT reactions to common antigen
-defective T cell proliferative response to mitogens in vitro
what is a common T+B severe combined immunodeficiency?
X-linked SCID
what causes x- linked SCID?
mutations in particular set of cytokine receptors.
can’t make T and NK cells
what is a possible treatment for some immunodeficiencies?
bone marrow transplant
what is hyper IgM syndrome?
high levels of IgM, low levels of others
B cells are unable to switch fro IgM to other bodies in infection
