Immune System Flashcards
What is the immune system
To protect the body from damage by microorganisms
How does the immune system protect the body
By using white blood cells like leukocytes and other cells from the lymphoid organs
What are examples of lymphoid organs
Bone marrow, thymus spleen, mucosa associated lymphoid tissue
What are the different types of immune cells
• lymphocytes
• phagocytes
• antigen presenting cells
• accessory cells
What do lymphocytes do
• control immune response by recognising molecules made by pathogens
• they recognise antigens and have specific cell surface antigen receptors
• the receptors are diverse so can recognise any molecule
• each lymphocyte makes 1 antigen receptor
What are the three types of lymphocytes
B, T lymphocytes and natural killer cells
What do natural killer cells do
For antiviral defence
