Immune REeposne Flashcards
What are the physical barriers that stop infection?
skin, mucous membranes, tears, earwax, mucus, and stomach acid
How does each barrier work?
Skin
Skin- Secrets sebum which lowers pH. Inhabitibal for pathogen growth. Swear contains salts which is hard for bacteria to survive.
Tears and eyelashes?
Tears contain lysozymes which r enzymes which destroy bacterial cells. Prevent enters of pathogens to eye. Eye lashes- blink.
Respiratory tact?
Mucus and ciliated cells.
Digestive system?
Stomach acid low pH (1.5-2.5)
Inhospitable for pathogen.
Describe the process of phagocytosis
(cellular process where specialized immune cells called phagocytes engulf and destroy foreign particles, pathogens, and cellular debris, ultimately contributing to the body’s defense mechanisms.) pasted from google.
What is inflammation?
Histamine triggers dilation of blood vessels and permeability of capillary walls.
Phagocytes, macrophages and natural killer cells fight infection r attached to site of infection.
