14
Q

How chromosomes are made

A

Nucleosome (8 separate histone protein attached to DNA molecule), multiple nucleosome coil together + stack on top as chromatin ( a supercoil), coils again to create chromosome

15
Q

Semi conservative=

A

DNA helix splits and one new strand is added to each new half. So DNA composed of a new one and an old one.

16
Q

What does poly-A RNA do?

A

Edits the RNA removing the intron (non-coding bit0 and leaving the extron (coding section)

17
Q

Polymorphism=

A

Benign mutation

18
Q

Out-frame deletion causes

A

one base deletion, huge effect

19
Q

In-frame deletion causes

A

one codon deletion

20
Q

Non-sense deletion causes

A

a stop codon either at deletion site or later on in sequence

21
Q

Mis-sense mutation causes

A

single base substitution ( so may change type of amino acid in protein), could also just be a polymorphism

22
Q

What occurs in prometaphase ?

A

Nuclear membrane breaks down, chromosomes attach to microtubules that have invaded

23
Q

Phenotype=

A

The appearance of an individual resulting from interaction of the environment and genome.

24
Q

Genotype=

A

The genetic constitution of an individual

25
Q

What is imprinting?

A

For some genes only one of the two passed on is active, either the one from the mother or the one from the father. Dependent on which one is active in the child will depend on whether they get the condition or not e.g onlt passed from father to son means activated on Y.

26
Q

Lyonosation=

A

Turning off of one X chromosome in females.
