-Banned undesirables (Insane people, homosexuals and criminals)
-Imposed literacy tests for over 16s
Emergency Quota Act
1921- Restricted number of immigrants admitted to 3% of the 1910 cencus
Johnson Reed Act
1924 -Reduced immigrants to 2% of the 1890 census
-Immigration quota of 150,000
National Origins Formula
1929- Confirmed 150,000 limit
-Banned Asian immigration altogether
Alien Registration Act
1940
- Required non-citizens to register with federal government as a war-time measure
- Turned into ‘green card’ system
- Green cards only going to ‘legal’ immigrants
Displaced Persons Act (2)
1948, extended 1950
- Allowed for the immigration of 415,000 people displaced by the war over 4 years
- BUT still within quota limit
Immigration and nationality Act (McCarren Walter Act) (4)

retained annual limit of 150,000 and the quota system
-Quota limit did not apply to the Western Hemisphere
- 85% of immigrants came from the North/ Western Europe
-Allowed the immigration of 100,000 Asian immigrants

-Allowed 214,000 European refugees
-OUTSIDE of quota limit

-Mass deportation of illegal, mostly Mexican immigrants

-Extended refugee legislation to cover people escaping from communist countries
