Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Flashcards
1
Q
Pathophysiology
A
Progressive thickening of ventricular muscle
Ventricles become narrowed reducing volume
Reduces cardiac output
Back-pressure results in atrial enlargement
2
Q
Who is most affected by condition
A
Cats esp. Maine Coons
3
Q
Aetiology (general) (4)
A
May be idiopathic
May be hereditary
May be congenital
May be acquired
4
Q
What is condition often secondary to and why (2)
A
Hyperthyroidism
- tachycardia causes muscle enlargement and reduction of ventricular volume
Hypertension
- more effort to circ. blood leads to hypertrophy
5
Q
Clinical signs (7)
A
May be asymptotic in early stages due to compensation
Lethargy/depression Anorexia Coughing Murmurs Arrhythmia Aortic thromboembolism - results in hind limb paralysis
6
Q
Diagnosis (5)
A
Hx/cs/exam Bloods inc. T4 BP Echocardiogram ECG
