Hydrophytes And Xerophytes Flashcards
What are hydrophytes
Plants that live in, or on the edges of, bodies of water
List all adaptations to do with the leaves of hydrophytes
Very thin , no waxy cuticle
Many always open stomata on the top of the leaf
Wide flat leaves
Air sacs
List all other adaptations of hydrophytes ( not to do with the leaves)
Reduced structure to the plant
Small roots
Large SA of stems and roots under water
Aerenchyma, packing tissue forms in the leaves, stems and roots
What is aerenchyma and its functions
Specialised parenchyma ( packing tissue) forms in the leaves stems and roots of hydrophytes Has many large air spaces formed by apoptosis, programmed cell death
What are xerophytes
Plants that are adapted to living in dry conditions, conserve water
Adaptations of xerophytes, to do with leaves
Thick waxy cuticle
Reduced number of leaves
Hairy leaves
Curled leaves leaf loss
Adaptations of xerophytes, not to do with leaves
Sunken stomata Reduced number of stomata Succulents Root adaptations Avoiding problems
Explain which/ how adaptions of xerophytes create micro climates of humid air
Sunken stomata located in the pits, reduces air movement
Hairy leaves, traps air
Curled leaves, confines all stomata into the same area decreasing water vapour gradient
How do xerophytes avoid problems
Lose leaves completely, become dormant , die completely leaving seeds behind to germinate + grow rapidly when rain falls
