What is the placenta?

A

The structure through which the foetus receives its nutrients and gets rid of its waste

How is the placenta used?

A

The blood from the foetus flows into the blood vessels in the placenta. Useful substances are carried to the foetus from the mother in the umbilical vein. The harmful substances pass into the mothers blood in the arteries for the mother to excrete them

What is the function of the amniotic sac?

A

It develops around the foetus, keeps it at a constant temperature and protects the foetus from desiccation and injury

What is gestation and how long does it take?

A

Commonly known as birth. It is the period which an embryo/foetus develops inside the womb. It usually takes around 40 weeks

What are the 5 steps of birth?

A
  1. Labour - change in hormones and contractions happen
  2. Water breaks - amniotic fluid released and contractions intensify
  3. Birth - contractions ouch the baby out, baby’s skull and bones are not fused allowing for the bones to shirt making it easier to come out vagina
  4. Umbilical cord - clamped at birth (belly button)
  5. Postpartum - placenta breaks away from uterus wall and falls out
