Q

What is literature review?

A

The search for a solution to a problem will involve a review of books, scientific journals and the internet to see what information has already been collected.
the reviewing of books, journals and internet to see if a problem is already solved

18
Q

What is observation?

A

The use of senses, instruments that enhance the senses, to gather information, like a microscope or a stethoscope.
scientists look for patterns, trends in order to draw conclusions.

19
Q

What is objectivity?

A

Not allowing thoughts or feeling to influence how you record or interpret observations.

20
Q

when is an experiment valid?

A

The extent to which an experiment tests what it is meant to test. How minimised the uncontrolled variables are.

21
Q

what is science

A

2 aspects, science is a process of inquiry - a way of finding out about human beings, their living and non living environments.
it is a body of knowledge - knowledge gained by systematic observation and testing of ideas.
knowledge is increasing.

22
Q

what is human biology?

A

the scientific study relating of humans and their interactions with their environment.

23
Q

give an example of observation

A

scientists who study the behaviour of monkeys and apes towards one another.
microbiologists study the structure of bacteria and viruses using electron microscopes.

24
Q

classification

A

the grouping of organisms based on the simialiarites between their characteristics; the placement of organisms into groups.

25
Q

what is a variable

A

any factor that may change during an experiment

26
Q

what is frequency

A

the number of times an event occurs

27
Q

what is a control

A

a procedure carried out to give a comparison in an experiment

28
Q

what is a control

A

a procedure carried out to give a comparison in an experiment

29
Q

what are the controlled variables

A

variables that are controlled during an experiment

30
Q

what are the uncontrolled variables

A

factors in an experiment that area not kept the same between the control and experimental set ups

31
Q

reliability

A

the extent in which the experiment gives the same result each time it is performed

32
Q

repetition

A

performing the same experiment many times

33
Q

data

A

observations and measurements; the results of an experiment

34
Q

table

A

an organised and concise means of presenting data

35
Q

graph

A

a visual way of representing data so it is easy to see trends and make predictions.

36
Q

ratio

A

a numerical statement of how one variable relates to the other.

37
Q

rate

A

a ratio that shows how long it takes to do something

38
Q

mean

A

the average set of data

39
Q

outliers

A

measurements well beyond the range of the rest of the measurements in a set. may be excluded when calculating the mean.

40
Q

frequency distribution

A

a table summarising data by shoeing how often a variable occurs, frequency table

41
Q

characteristics of reports?

A

it is impersonal and written in past tense.

42
Q

what does a scientific report include?

A
  • title - name of author
  • Introduction - stating the nature of the problem and hypothesis tested
  • materials and equipment - list of apparatus used
  • procedure - describing how the investigation was carried out.
  • results - tables, graphs, diagrams, photos
  • discussion - includes comments about the results and how they relate to the hypothesis
  • conclusion - states whether the hypothesis is supported or disproved and summarises what can be concluded
  • further research - suggests areas for further investigation
  • references - books
  • acknowledgements - ppl who helped
