Student Emotional Reactions
Anxiety a big issue in flight instruction.
Anxiety can be countered by reinforcing the students enjoyment of flight.
Normal reaction to stress:
Responds rapidly and exactly
Abnormal reactions to stress:
Extreme over cooperation
Painstaking self-control
Inappropriate laughter or singing
Quick changes in emotions
Basic Elements of Communication
Source- person or media sending the message
Symbols - words, sounds, pictures, expressions
Receiver - listener, reader, student
Barriers to Effective Communication
Lack of common experience
Confusion between the symbol and the symbolized object (words and what they actually mean)
Overuse of abstractions (words that are to general not specific)
Interference (loud noise or needing to pee)
Developing Communication Skills
Communication is both ways
Teach from deep understanding and personal experiences
Effective listening for Instructors:
Don’t interrupt Don’t judge Think before answering Be close enough to hear Watch nonverbal behavior Be aware of biases Look for underlying feelings Focus on listening Don’t insist on the last word
Student steps to effective communication:
Be ready to listen Listen to understand not to refute Don’t daydream Be responsible for listening Listen for main ideas Be emotionally calm Take notes
