how instruments use the pitot static & bloackage Flashcards

1
Q

how the altimeter use the pitot tube/ ram air and the static port

A

impact air into the pitot tube creates ram air pressure and the static port measures the ambient air pressure

then the difference, specifically impact air MINUS static pressure = dynamic pressure (aka airspeed)

2
Q

how does the vsi work

A

it uses the static port to measure static pressure. it measures changes in static pressure and how fast those changes are happening to calculate rate of climb (or descent)

3
Q

how does the altimeter work

A

it uses the static port to detect changes in density. as you go higher in the atmosphere, density decreases. therefore if the static port receives lots of density it means the aircraft is at lower altitudes, if the static port receives less dense air it means the aircraft is at higher altitudes

Q

what happens if the pitot tube is blocked

A

ONLY AIRSPEED IS AFFECTED
two situations
- air inlet blocked BUT drain hole is open
OR
- air inlet AND drain hole blocked

Q

what happens if the pitot tube AIR INLET and DRAIN HOLE are blocked

A

ONLY AIRSPEED IS AFFECTED

the air speed indicator will act like an altimeter and is no longer reliable

Q

what happens if the static port is blocked (*)

A

altimeter is one instrument that is affected

it will freeze on the altitude where it was blocked

Q

what happens if the static port is blocked (~)

A

airspeed is one instrument affected

  • only indicates correctly AT BLOCKAGE ALTITUDE
  • at higher altitudes = airspeed indicates LOWER then it should
  • at lower altitudes = airspeed indicates HIGHER then it should

Q

what happens when you use an alternate static source

A

a lower static pressure is measured

airspeed = indicates a FASTER speed then it should
altimeter = indicate HIGHER then it should
vsi = momentarily shows a climb
