Narrative Films
films that tell a fictional story, typically action-based
Genre Films
films in a specific style with common elements, such as Horror or Sci-Fi films
Action
a character trying to get what they want
Plot
the arrangement of actions in a story
Protagonist
the main character taking the central actions
Antagonist
the main character opposing the protagonist’s actions
Conflict
resistance to a character getting what they want
Dramatic Question
the main question if action in the film
Crisis
the point in the plot where the action is in question, the moment of greatest tension in the film
Climax
the answer to the dramatic question (happens after the crisis)
Hero
a protagonist with positive traits who is willing to sacrifice himself or herself for a greater good; we see our best selves in the hero
Antihero
a protagonist with negative traits who is fascinating because of their personality or bizarre traits; we see our worst selves in the antihero, or see our worst fears
Ambiguity
a deliberate lack of clarity used for evocative purposes that stimulates the audience’s curiosity
“Otherness”
the concept that in Horror or Sci-Fi films, the monster, alien or antagonist, often represents not just something that is different, but also repressed social groups, repressed elements of the culture, repressed feelings or repressed fears
Startle Effect
when something suddenly jumps out in a horror film and it is scary; also called a “jump scare”
