Q

Describe the Follicular Phase

A

Pituitary release is high levels of FSH
FSH stimulates development of follicles
FSH stimulates release of oestrogen by the follicle
Oestrogen stimulates proliferation of endometrium for implantation
High oestrogen levels causes cervical mucus to become watery and a release of LH into the blood
The high-level LH (around day 14) triggers ovulation

Q

Describe the Luteal Phase

A

After ovulation the high-level of LH causes the follicle to develop into the corpus luteum
The corpus luteum secretes progesterone and oestrogen
Progesterone causes further development of the endometrium
Both oestrogen and progesterone rise to maximum
The high levels inhibit the pituitary gland from secreting FSH and LH
The low level of FSH suppresses development of follicles
The low-level of LH causes the corpus luteum to degenerate and progesterone to fall to a minimum
The low level of progesterone triggers menstruation
If fertilisation occurs a hormone causes the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone until taken over by placenta

Q

How do we stimulate ovulation and what are the risks?

A

drugs that prevent the negative feedback effect of oestrogen on FSH secretion.
Other drugs mimic the action of FSH and LH. These drugs can cause super ovulation that can result in multiple births or be used to collect ova for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) programmes.
