- intentional disinfomation for politcal and/or commercial purposes presented as real news
echo chambers
(social) media space where information consumers (intentionally) only self-expose to content and communities that confirm their beliefs and perceptions while avoiding those that challenge them
filter bubbles
algorithmic curation and personalization systems that decrease users’ likelihood of encountering ideologically cross-cutting news content (reboot of one step flow)
Why do we believe fake news
cognitive assonace = we like to believe things in line with previously held beliefs –> this leads to polarization: it is constantly confirmed that what we know is true
echo chamber effect:
- freuquently heuristic = we keep seeing the same thing over and over again
- social credibility: environment beliefs in it, do you? –> you like spending time with people who believe the same things as you
we like to believe what is good and easy for us –> inconvenient truth: we dont like it so we dont believe it
