Homeostasis and Response Flashcards
what do we need to control in our bodies (3 things)?
Blood glucose concentration
body temperature
water intake
what is homeostasis?
process by which the body maintains a constant internal environment
What is it called when we are too hot/ too cold?
too hot- hyperthermia
too cold- hypothermia
What does hyperthermia cause?
organs and brain slows down and tries to preserve heat causing heart failure as too much vasoconstriction leads to not enough blood in heart
What is the bodies reaction to too cold?
- hair raise for insulation
- shivering to release heat energy
What is the bodies reaction to too hot?
- sweat
- lowering hairs to reduce insulation
- vasodilation ( The process includes the widening of blood vessels at the skin surface to increase heat loss through the surface of the skin)
to release heat through skin
What are receptors?
specialised cells that sense a stimuli like skin receptors/ eye receptor
Why does water content need to be regulated?
wrong amount of water causes cells to undergo osmosis and burst
What is the Co-ordination centre?
(spinal cord, brain and pancreas`)– they receive information from receptors and tell the effectors what to do
What are effectors?
part of the body that produces a response so muscles contractions and hormones released from glands
