Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis
dynamic state of equilibrium ensuring that the body’s internal environment remains constant despite both internal and external changes
What is negative feedback
process by which the body can reverse the direction of movement back towards homeostasis
what is positive feedback
process by which the body can move further away from homeostasis
What two bodily processes are regulated by positive feedback
Uterine contractions stimulated by oxytocin during labor
Lactation during breastfeeding stimulated by prolactin
What cells are required for perfect tissue repair
parenchymal cells
What cells result in scarring during tissue repair
fibroblasts (process is known as fibrosis)
What two systems regulate homeostasis
Endocrine and Nervous
Where does the majority of body heat come from
catabolism of food
What are the four vectors of heat loss
radiation
conduction
convection
evaporation
What is the function of baroreceptors
monitor BP
What is the function of chemoreceptors
Monitor Blood acidity (H+ conc), CO2, and O2 levels
What is the function of proprioceptors
Bodily awareness
What is the function of Nociceptors
Monitoring pain
