What is the Dawes Plan?
A plan made by Gustav Stresemann (Chancellor) and Charles G Dawes to support Germany with repaying their reparations.
What is The Reichstag?
Lower House/Dominant House.

a violent attempt to overthrow a government ‘uprising’
What is Socialism?
A system in which society, usually in the form of the government, owns and controls the means of production.
What is the SPD?
(Social Democratic Party of Germany) was Germany’s largest party until 1932. Its strength was based in the growing industrial working class.
What was the Ruhr Crisis?
1918-1923: in retaliation for the failure to repay reparations, the French and Belgians sent 750 000 troops into the Ruhr to confiscate resources
What was stated in Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles?
Article 231, often known as the War Guilt Clause, was the opening article of the reparations section of the Treaty of Versailles
What is Proportional Representation
Each party got the same percentage of seats in parliament as the percentage of votes it received in an election. This meant there were lots of small parties in Parliament making it hard to pass laws and led to weak and short-lived governments.
What effect did WWI have on Germany? (ABCDEF)

- Blockade by the British Navy left many Germans starving
- Communists plotted revolutions
- Defeat in WWI left many Demoralised and bitter
- Ebert (Friedrich) was elected as 1st president but he had little experience
- Freikorps units of ex-soldiers attacked democratic politicians and institutions
What is imperialism
the idea of expanding one’s territory by taking over another country
What are the emergency powers?
extraordinary and expansive power like the authority to rule by command or suspend legal and civil rights. These powers are granted to national leaders to deal with crisis or national threats.
What were the effects of the hyperinflation crisis on Germany?
- Mid-class workers lost their savings
- Shortages of domestic investments and the loss of confidence in German industries and businesses
- Dangerously dependent on US loans
- prices would go up a few times a day, so workers had to be paid twice a day
- people physically struggled to carry enough money around as prices for basic items were so high
What is an authoritarian?
Describes a government that makes decision without consultation and can maintain considerable power without being answerable to others - e.g) China or Russia
What were the implications of WWI for Germany?

- national pride decreasing
- change in social values
- political shifts
