History and Content Flashcards
What is Biopsycholpgy?
How our brain, neurotransmitters and other aspects of our biology influence our behaviours thoughts and feelings.
What is Dualism and who introduced it?
- Belief that the mind and body are two separate entities (assumes existence of a soul)
- Aristotle, Renée Descartes
- Cartisian dualism
What is Monism and who suggested it?
- Belief that mind and body are one
- Christian von Wolff
- Mind is product of the brain
- Most common view of biopsychologists
What Hippocrates a monoist or a dualist?
Monoist
What did Galvani discover?
Experimented on frog with electrode and found that muscles contractors with electricity
What did Műller discover?
Doctoring of specific nerve energy- that we interact with the outside world through nerves. There’s no direct connection to brain
What did Flourens do and why?
Experimental ablation- cutting out or wounding certain parts of the brain to see how organism functions. Intended to find specific functions.
What did Broca discover?
Aphasia-where a person knows what they want to say but is unable to say it. (Different from Wernickes cuz there the person doesn’t know of their spoken mistakes)
What did Fritsch & Hitzig discover?
Specific areas of the brain control specific parts of the body (found this by stimulating the cortexes of live dogs)
What did Darwin and Wallace discover?
- Theory of evolution and common descent
- Theory of Natural Selection
What is natural selection?
Process by which selected traits that confer a selected advantage become more prevalent in the population
What did Earnest Weber do?
Nerves, nervous system and brain form the biological foundation of psychological processes
-Noticable Difference-we only understand the environment through these (smallest perceivable Difference between two similar stimuli)
