History Flashcards
Known as the father of the microscope. Took scrapings of teeth and looked at them with a magnifying glass under the sun.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Proved biogenesis and disproved spontaneous generation using pasteurization. Came up with germ theory of disease.
Louis Pasteur
One of the fathers of epidemiology. Invoked hand washing to decrease maternal death rate after childbirth.
Ignaz Semmelweiss
Father if epidemiology. Determined that a water pump was the cause of a cholera outbreak in London. This was the first epidemiological study (surgeon).
John Snow
Verification of germ theory of disease. He injected mice with an isolated culture. Upon infection he obtained a pure sample. The sick animals were isolated.
Robert Koch (Koch’s postulates)
1st to dispute spontaneous generation. He used maggots in his experiment.
Francesco Redi
