Histo Lab Flashcards
Why are red blood cells shaped the way they are?
increase surface area for gas exchange and allows for flexibility through the blood vessels
Why is it important to know the diameter of a RBC?
to determine whether cells are macrocytic or microcytic which are characteristics associated with different diseases and disorders
Why are RBC’s red?
Iron in the heme group of hemoglobin
How can you tell the difference between arterial blood versus venial blood?
Arterial is bright red and venial is dark red
What is a name for all white blood cells?
leukocytes
How can you tell the sex of a patient via a blood smear?
you cant really unless you have an accurate RBC count you can estimate that it will be male if there is a a lot of RBC in comparison to the average RBC of a female
Eiosinophils have what color granules and what type of nucleus and what do the granules contain?
red, bilobed, histaminase, MBP and peroxidase
What do eiosinophils do?
function in Ag-Ab phagocytosis and reduction in allergic response as well as parasitic infection.
basophils have what color granules. What is their function and what do their granules contain?
What shape is their nucleus?
basophils have blue/black granules. They function inflammation and the allergic response and granules contain peroxidase, histamine, and heparin. S shape.
Are monocytes phagocytic in the peripheral blood?
no tissues
What are monocytes precursors to in the CT?
Lung?’
Liver?
Brain?
monocytes are precursors to histocytes and osteoclasts in the connective tissues, in the lungs they become alveolar monocytes, in the liver they are perisinusoidal macrophages or kupffer cells and in the brain they become microglial cells.
