Hip Conditions and Surgery Flashcards
how could you differentiate a child’s skeleton from an adult’s using an x ray?
growth plates (Area between acetabulum and head of femur) are open in child’s x ray
give an example of how hip movement can be blocked?
an extrusion in the head of the femur will jam into the socket
what 2 deformities in the shape of the hip joint can you get?
CAM
pincer
what structure does the CAM deformity affect?
head of the femur
what structure does the pincer deformity affect?
acetabulum (comes out further than it should)
what should be done about a cam/pincer deformity?
nothing if asymptomatic
arthroscopy
open shaving
which imaging shows fluid in the hip joint?
MRI
name the layers of the head of the femur starting with cartilage
hyaline articular cartilage
subchondral bone
cancellous bone
which condition is a protrusion into the pelvis known to happen in?
RA
why does a protrusion into the pelvis happen?
joint reaction force goes through the centre of the femoral head and because the bone is so soft from RA it goes straight into the pelvis
what surgery can be done for a late presentation of DDH?
osteotomy - do controlled break through pelvis and part of the hip to give them better stability and coverage of hip
name a condition that causes bone failure?
avascular necrosis
what symptoms do patients need to have to be ideal candidates for a THR?
reduced walking distance no help from analgesics night pain impairment of activities OVER 65
what technique could you do to tell if pain is coming from the hip or other area?
put local anaesthetic into hip; if pain is still there you know its not mainly the hip thats causing pain
do THR patients usually feel discomfort throughout their time with it?
no, feels like normal hip
