Threats faced by Henry VII during the Lambert Simnel affair.
Who was Lambert Simnel?
Lambert Simnel was a young bot from Oxford. He had been groomed by Richard Symonds, who wanted rewards in the church.
It was theorised that John de La Pole was involved in the scheming.
When was the Lambert Simnel affair?
The Lambert Simnel affair dominated Henry’s government from February to mid-June of 1487.
Why did Lambert Simnel impersonate the Earl of Warwick?
Edward, Earl of Warwick, was the leading Yorkist Claimant to the throne.
- Son of George, Duke of Clarence
- No one had seen the Earl of Warwick since Bosworth.
Why wasn’t Simnel’s claim that he was Warwick a problem for Henry Vii?
The real Earl of Warwick was alive and in the Tower of London under Henry’s custody. In order to disprove Simnel he paraded Warwick around London.

Why did Maximillian support the Lambert Simnel affair?
He was alarmed by the ascension of Henry as he had been helped by the French, his main rival.
What happened during the Simnel affair?
- Margaret of Burgundy acknowledged Simnel as her nephew and gave Lovell 2000 mercanaries for landing in Ireland.
- In January of 1487, Irish Magnates accepted Simnel
- May 1487, Irish Magnates crown Simnel Edward VI.
How did the Lambert Simnel Rebellion end?
In December of 1486 Henry Vii summonded a great council to deal with conspiritors and it met in February of the following year.
- Simnel landed in Lacashire in June and Henry set out with his troops.
- Simnel failed to gain support in Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Why did Simnel fail to gain support in Cumbria and Yorkshire?
The people of England were so sick of the conflict caused by the War of the Roses that many wanted a stable king and not another revolution.
What was the Battle of the Stoke?
The Battle of Stoke was the final battle of the War of the Roses. It was 8000 rebels vs 12000 of the King’s men.

Why was the Battle of Stoke significant?
The Battle of Stoke was the last battle of the War of the Roses. The war of the Roses had long been a threat to Henry’s dynastic security, therefore henry was more stable on his throne.
What happened after the Lambert Simnel affair?

Why didn’t Henry kill Lambert Simnel?
To show that he could be forgiving towards his enemies.
What was the weakness of Henry vii in regards to rewarding his supporters?
Henry vii had only attainded 28 men at this point and therefore had less land to reward supporters with. However, Henry rarely rewarded people with land anyways, he often only knighted them instead of granting them expensive titles.
