Heating and Cooling Systems Flashcards
what does the cars cooling system consist of
pump thermostat radiation and coolant
what is a pump
phushes coolant around the engine
what is a thermostat
this releases coolant into the radiator once it reacher a high temperature
what is a radiator
set of tubes surrounded by thin pieces of metal called radiator fins. Heat from the coolant is transferred to the fins, which then transfer it to the air moving past them
what part of petrol vehicles chemical energy is useful and useless
12 - 30% of chemical energy is used for kinetic energy in wheels
the rest turns into heat into heat energy and the excess heat must be removed to prevent damange to the engine.
what is a heat pump
allow the opposite movement of energy from cold place to warmer plac
what is teh compressor do in a heat pump
pressurises a gas called a refrigerant driving up its temperature
what does teh condesor do in heat pumps
refrigerant travels throuh a set of tubes called a condensor, where it releases heat to its surroundings and condenses into a liquid
what does an expansion valve do in a heat pump
refrigerant is depressurised by an expansion valve causing it to cool down
what does an evaporator do in a heat pump
the cool refrigerant travels through an evaporator, absorbing heat from its surrounding and turning into a gas as it does so.
what is evaporative air conditioning
it cools teh room by using cooling afect of evaporating water
how does evaporative air condtitioning do
air is fored through a wet filter pad
heat form the air is absorbed as teh water in the pad evaporates
the cooled air is forced into the room by a fan.
