Perth’s Climate Conditions
Warm Temperature, Climate Zone 5, 4 Noticeable Seasons.
How do windows allow heat transfer/
Depending on the thermal performance of your windows (how well the frame and glass conduct heat), will effect how much heat is transferred through the glass by radiation.
What is Passive Cooling?
Passive cooling is a design choice to reduce heat gain, increase heat loss and control the temperature in hot weather. Cheapest way to cool a home.
What is Passive Heating?
Passive heating is a design choice used to trap heat inside your house and evenly distributing it. Cheapest way to heat a home.
How do Eaves and Windows work together?
Eaves provide shade to windows from direct sunlight and helps keep your house at a comfy temp. During summer, heat is blocked, during winter, heat is able to reach due to the Sun’s winter path.
What is a deciduous tree and why are they useful?
A deciduous tree is a tree that drops its leaves to adapt to the weather. In summer, trees provide shade. In winter, leaves fall and allow for sun to shine through
How does evaporation help humans cool down?
Conduction of heat energy and sweat. When doing sweat-producing tasks, heat energy transfers to the sweat which then evaporates, taking the heat with them and cooling the body down.
What does a ceiling fan do?
Circulate air evenly in rooms, creating the feeling of a cool breeze due to the air movement.
Why does a ceiling fan NOT lower the temp of a room?
They only distribute air throughout the room and it can’t change the temperature in any way.
How can a ceiling fan help make a human feel colder?
The air movement caused by the fan makes it feel like wind on the skin. The faster the blades move, the faster the cool air displaces the warm air, this fast process makes us feel cooler.
Explain how it is more efficient to use a ceiling fan along with an air conditioner
It is more effective because by moving the air around the room, the ceiling fan creates the feeling of wind/breeze effect indoors. The temperature that the air conditioner is set to produces the air, then the ceiling fan circulates it around the room, making it feel like indoor wind, and causing it to feel up to 5 degrees cooler.
Which is more cost effective: running an aircon by itself or running one with a ceiling fan? Why?
It is more cost effective to run an air conditioner along with a ceiling fan because the air can be effectively circulated around the room even after the air conditioner is turned off.
