Heart Anatomy Flashcards
describe the hearts position
the heart lies aboves the diaphragm and near the midline and ways between 250 to 300 grams
what is the mediastinium
the mediastium is where the heart lies and it is a mass of tissue which extends from the sternum down to the vertebral column between the lungs
what is the pericardium and its function
the pericardium is fibrous tissue which surrounds the heart and it works to protect the heart and hold its position in the mediastinium
describe the fibrous pericardium
outer layer
tough and inelastic
describe the serous pericardium
thin and has 2 layers the outer parietal and the inner visceral
name the 3 layers of the hearts wall
outer - epicardium
middle - myocardium
inner - endocardium
describe the myocardium
this is the middle layer of the hearts wall which is composed of cardiac muscle and is responsible for the hearts pumping action
describe the endocardium
the endocardium is the hearts inner wall and is composed of a thin squemnous epithilium layer.
it is responsible for the lining of the myocardium and the blood vessels
describe the hearts chambers and connecting vessels
There is the right atrium and ventricle and the left atrium and ventricle.
And the connecting blood vessels are:
Pulmonary artery- carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the right ventricle.
Vena cava – carries deoxygenated blood from the body into the right atrium
Pulmonary vein - carries oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium
Aorta - carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body
