Heart Flashcards
Aortic valve during systole
Aortic valve is open
Mitral valve firing aortic valve
Closed, preventing blood from regurgitating back into the left atrium
Aortic valve during diastole
Closed, preventing regurgitating of blood from aorta back into the left ventricle
Mitral valve during diastole
Open, allowing blood to flow front he left atrium into the relaxed left ventricle
S1 and S2 define
Duration of systole and diastole
SI
Closure of mitral valve ]
- causes the first Herat sound
S2
Caused by the closure of the aortic valve
-another diastole begins at this point
S3
Usually in kids
- rapid deceleration of the column of blood against the ventricular wall
- in older adults, an S3, sometimes termed an S2 gallop, usually indicates a pathological change in ventricular compliance
S4
Atrial contraction
S2 components
A2
-louder and reflects the high pressure in the aorta
P2
-softer, reflecting the lower pressure in the pulmonary artery
Stenotic valve
Abnormally narrowed valvular orifice that obstructs blood flow, as in aortic stenosis, and curses a characteristic murmur
Where do you listen for an aortic valve murmur
Right second interspace to the apex
Where do you hear pulmonic valve murmurs
Left 2nd and 3rd interspace close the sternum, but also at higher or lower levels
Where do you hear tricuspid murmurs
At or neat the lower left sterna border
Where do you hear a mitral valve murmur
At and around the cardiac apex
