hearing notes Flashcards
frequency (pitch)
dimension of frequency determined by wavelength of sound measured by hertz
intensity (loudness)
amount of energy in a wave determined by amplitude; related to perceived loudness, measured in decibels
cochlea
coiled, fluid-filled tube in the inner ear that transducers sound vibrations
frequency theory
the rate of impulses traveling up the auditory nerve matches the frequency of a tone, thus enabling us to sense its pitch
place theory
sound frequency stimulate basilar membrane at separate places resulting in perceived pitch
localization of sound
because we have 2 ears, sounds that reach one faster than the other makes us localize the sound
noise-induced hearing loss
the pressure inability to detect higher frequency sounds do
damage the hair cells accused over time
conduction deafness
hearing loss caused by damage to the cochlea’s receptor cells or to the auditory nerve, nerve deafness
sensorineural deafness
hearing loss caused by damage to the cochlea’s receptor cells or to the auditory nerve
cochlear implant
a small, complex electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing
