Social Determinants of health
The conditions in wich ppl r born, grow,live, work n age.
Proximal determinants - direct influence eg smokin, nutrition
Intermediate determinants- material factors eg personal wealth, access to healthcare
Distal determinants- indirectly affect health- eg gov policies
Equality vs equity
Inequality= unequal distribution Inequity= unfair distribution
Structure
Social structure n social institutions dictate thoughts n behaviours of individuals - ie decisions made for the individual eg bannin smokin in public places
Agency- individuals choose their own behavious eg person seeks education on smoking ban
Availability
Whether somethin exists
Accessibility
Whether something is easy to access n use
Horizontal equity
Like equality ( equal treatment for all)
Vertical equity
Treat everyone differently as they require it to end up with equal outcomes
Primordial prevention
Prevents risk factors from occuring
Eg taxation of cigarettes to limit availability
Primary prevention
Stops healthy person from developing the disease. Involve risk factor modification eg stoppin smokin
Stigma
Disapproval or a person or gp based on perceptions of them
Discrimination
Unjust or prejudiced treatment of differnt groups of ppl, often on grounds of race, sex or age
Refugee
Person who has been forced to leave their country to escape war, persecution or natural disaster
