Q

What is the characteristics of a mouse?

A

A mouse has 1 or more finger operated buttons. When these buttons are clicked, they perform an action.

A mouse must sit on a flat surface to move around using either
a roller ball or optical sensor.

Controls the pointer on a visual display unit. (VDU)

Q

What is the characteristics of a Graphics Digitiser?

A

Consists of a flat surface where you can use a special “pen”/ stylus to write or draw with. As you draw on the surface an image will appear on the screen of the connected computer.

Q

What is the characteristics of a Touchscreen?

A

Works by using your finger to touch the screen. Touching is detected and translated into instructions for the device. The screen can detect the difference between tapping, swiping and pinching actions. Touching the screen changes the voltage allowing the computer to locate where the screen is touched using x, y co-ordinates.

Q

What are advantages of the Touchscreen?

A

Easy to use.

Can see all available options.

Don’t need excellent ICT skills to use.

Can be adapted for many uses for example: cashpoint, supermarkets, mobile phones, and airports.

Usually fixed to larger devices so there is less chance of them being stolen.

Q

What is the characteristics of a Speakers/headphones

A

Uses audio signals and converts them to sound. It has several parts:

They allow sound output when designing multimedia solutions.

18
Q

What is the uses of a Speakers/headphones

A

Used to output sound.

For example: Music, audio from films, satellite navigation voice, text-to-speech systems.

19
Q

What are advantages of the Speakers/headphones

A

Useful for visually impaired users where text or figures can be spoken.

Natural way to communicate.

20
Q

What are disadvantages of the Speakers/headphones

A

Can disturb others who are trying to work.

Good quality speakers can be expensive.

Can require additional desk space.

21
Q

What is the characteristics of a Laser printer?

A

Uses a laser beam to “write” the image onto a light-sensitive drum. The drum uses electrostatics to attract toner to the image of the drum. Paper is pressed against the drum to transfer the image.

22
Q

What is the uses of a Laser printer?

A

Used to print documents at high speed.

23
Q

What are advantages of the Laser printer?

A

Produces high quality prints.

Prints very quickly,

Very quiet.

Can get colour laser printouts.

24
Q

What are disadvantages of the Laser printer?

A

Produces shiny images.

More suited to text printing.

Can be quite expensive.

As they are non-impact printers, multi-part stationery cannot be used.

25
Q

What is the characteristics of a 3D printer?

A

Usually cube shaped with a transparent “door” that can be opened to remove the finished product.

The “product” is created in layers.

Ususally works alongside CAD -
Computer Aided Design

26
Q

What is the uses of a 3D printer?

A

Prototyping in the Medical, Aerospace, Automotive, Jewellery, and Art industries.

Gradually prints out a 3D object one layer at a time.

27
Q

What are advantages of the 3D printer?

A

Streamlines production and design processes.

Saves time and money at the initial product development.

Can print onto a variety of surfaces.

28
Q

What are disadvantages of the 3D printer?

A

Equipment very expensive.

There is a wide range of printing materials from plastics, ceramics, metals and many others. The price difference between different materials is huge.

Can normally only produce a prototype.

29
Q

What is the characteristics of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)?

A

Rigid magnetic disk(s) enclosed in a sealed container.

The disc must be formatted for data to be stored on it.

Each disc has two surfaces to allow it to be written to and read from.

30
Q

What is the uses of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)?

A

Stores all the programs, software and applications used by the computer or user.

31
Q

What are advantages of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)?

A

High recording density.

Large storage capacity.
(Especially compared to solid state storage devices.)

Faster than CD/ DVD.
Cheap per megabyte.

Stored items are not lost when computer is switched off.

32
Q

What are disadvantages of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)?

A

Slower than RAM or ROM.

Can crash which stops the computer working.

Regular crashes damage the surface.

33
Q

What is the characteristics of High Definition (HD) Storage Media?

A

An optical disc format used to store high-definition video as well as games.

Equipment that can store high quality data. This includes HDDVD or Blu-Ray, optical devices.

Uses a blue laser to burn much smaller pits onto the surface, increasing the density and therefore storage capacity.

34
Q

What is the uses of High Definition (HD) Storage Media?

A

Stores much more than a DVD (50GB) Uses laser technology to retrieve data at high speeds.

To store large amounts of high-quality data, such as films.

35
Q

What are advantages of High Definition (HD) Storage Media?

A

Blu-Ray and HD DVD disks work the same way as DVD disks but can hold more high-quality data. Better picture, better sound than previous optical media.

36
Q

What are disadvantages of High Definition (HD) Storage Media?

A

You need dedicated players. With so much data it can take time to load a film.

37
Q

What is the characteristics of a Solid State Drive (SSD)?

A

A collection of memory chips controlled by its own software. The software makes the chips act like a disk drive.

The storage components are embedded as part of an electronic circuit board, referred to as flash memory and are non-volatile.

38
Q

What are advantages of the Solid State Drive (SDD)?

A

Faster RAM. Faster start-up. Less noise. Disk defragmenting is not required. Less power requirements. Non-volatile.

39
Q

What is the uses of a Solid State Drive (SDD)?

A

In some machines these are replacing hard disk drives.

Using a USB connection, data from these cards can be downloaded onto the computer.

Store data using flash memory faster than hard disk drives

40
Q

What are disadvantages of the Solid State Drive (SDD)?

A

Limited Capacity.

Considerably more expensive per unit than magnetic storage.

More vulnerable to abrupt power loss and electro-magnetic fields.
