lamina propria is fixed to the periosteum by bands of fibrous C.T.
Fibrous C,T dividE the submucosa into compartments containing fat cells.
The fatty zone acts as a cushion

Present posterior to the fatty zone.
The submucosa contains pure mucous glands

Its histology is similar to the gingiva but:
Epithelial rete pegs are short and broad
submucosa contains fat cells anteriorly and mucous glands posteriorly.
