hand stuff, not muscles Flashcards
whats thhe palmar aponeurosis and its function
a triangular condensation of the deep fascia, directly deep to the skin. it anchors to the flexor retinaculum, stabilises the flexor tendons
under the palmar aponeurosis what do we find?
we get the flexor tendon sheaths, the synovial flexor sheath and the synovial flexor sheath
what is the fibrous flexor sheath, whats it made of, whats it do
this is formed by arches and cruciate ligaments. it goes from the metacarpal head to the distal phalanx.
it functions to hold the tendons in place and prevent them from bowing when the digits are flexed
where is the fibrous sheath more loose and why?
more loose over the joint spaces to allow the joint movements
whats the synovial flexor sheath and its function
this sheat envelopes the flexor tendons of the hand. there are two of these, main one envelopes the Flexor digitorum profondus and the flexor digitorum superficialis.
flexor pollicilis longus tendon has its own synovial sheath covering.
these sheaths function to prevent the tendons from rubbing on one anther.
what can the flexor retinaculum also be called
the transverse carpal ligament
what are the attachments of the transverse carpal ligament
laterally the scaphoid and trapezium, medially the pisiform and hamate
whats carpal tunnel syndrome and how do we get it
when we have repetitive strain and pressure on the hand we can thicken the transverse carpal ligament. this results in the compression of the median nerve which is running through the carpal tunnel
what are the contents of the carpal tunnel
flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profondus and flexor pollicis longus tendons. also the median nerve
what muscle tendon travels through the flexor retinaculum itself
the tendon of the flexor pollicis longus
