Haematopoeisis Flashcards
1
Q
Where does haematopoeisis take place?
A
In the bone marrow
2
Q
What are the functions of growth factors?
A
- Help proliferation
- Help maturation
- Can supress the cells that are dying
- They can help end stage maturation
- They can help functional activation
3
Q
How is erythropoiesis controlled?
A
- Controlled by the cells in the kidney which are oxygen sensing cells. Depending on the level of oxygen, they will produce erythropoeitin (GF) which helps for the production of red blood cells.
4
Q
What growth factor is clinically used?
A
Erythropoeitin (EPO) which is mainly used in end stage renal disease
5
Q
What are leukaemias?
A
Malignancies of haematopoietic cells
6
Q
What are lymphomas?
A
Malignancies of lymphoid cells
7
Q
What are myelomas?
A
Malignancy of plasma cells
8
Q
What is myeloproliferative disease and myeloidysplasia?
A
Neoplastic chronic abnormal myeloid proliferation
9
Q
Where do T cells develop in?
A
The thymus
10
Q
Where do B cells develop in?
A
The bone marrow
11
Q
What are dendritic cells?
A
Antigen presenting cells
12
Q
What are mast cells?
A
Release histamine
