Habitats and Ecosystems Flashcards
Habitat
A place where an organism lives
Organisms
All living things, such as plants, animals and bacteria
Biotic factors
These are living factors - partners for mating, organisms to eat, and organisms they may compete with for food and shelter.
Abiotic factors
These are non-living factors - water, light, wind, soil and temperature.
Habitat requirements
Requirements that need to be met by the living thing for them to live there.
Nocturnal
Active and hunt at night
Ecosystem
Abiotic and biotic factors interacting with each other and their environment
Environment
The things that affect a plant or an animal in its habitat - the temperature, wind, quality of the air, quality of the water, type of soil
Ecology
The study of the interactions between livings things that
Ecologists
People who study ecology
Biosphere
A place where life exists
Water Salinity
How salty the water is
Parasite
The organism living in another
Host
The organism with something living inside it
Food chain
A simple model that shows energy flow from one species to another
Producers
A living thing that produces its own food by using sunlight
Consumer
A living thing that gets its food by eating other living things
Photosynthesis
The reaction in producers that transforms light energy into chemical energy.
Multicellular organism
A living thing made up of two or more cells
Adaptations
Characteristics that help organisms survive and reproduce
Selection pressure
A challenge that affects an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce
Behavioural adaptation
An adaptation that changes the way you behavioural or action
Structural adaptation
An adaptation that changes the way the body structure
Physiological adaptation
Something the animal does not have hold of (internal body process)
Symbiosis
Two different kinds of organisms that live together
Symbiotic relationships
Relationships between organisms. There are three types : commensalism, mutualism, parasitism
Independent
Works by yourself
Interdependent
Depend on each other for survival
Commensalism
A type of relationship where one organism benefits but the other is not affected
Mutualism
A type of relationship where both organisms benefit and neither is harmed
Parasitism
A type of relationship where on organism is harmed
