What is growth?
size, physique, proportions, composition
What is maturation?
skeletal, sexual, somatic, dental
What is development?
cognitive, emotional, social, motor
How do we measure maturity?
Skeletal age, secondary sex characteristics, age at menarche, endocrine markers, somatic growth
What is puberty?
Biological process by which childs body matures into adult form capable of sexual reproduction
When do boys mature?
Enter puberty at 10/11 y/o
Greater gains in height, weight, BMI, muscle mass
High self-esteem, socially skilled, confident
What is late maturation in boys?
Boys enter puberty at 13/14 years old
Experience lesser gains in height etc
Tall and lean physique
Anxious and socially awkward
When do girls mature?
9-10 years old
Greater pubertal gains in height weight etc
Endomorphic physique
Lower self-esteem, introverted, depression, eating disorders
What is late maturation in girls?
Smaller pubertal gains
Extended childhood growth, taller as adults
Ectomorphic/ linear physique
