People bought items without having the money to buy them. Mostly poor and middle-class people. Created major debt and false prosperity.
Black Tuesday
Oct 29, 1929. The day the stock market officially fell.
Shantytowns/Hoovervilles
Slums and shack communities built by unemployed and destitute people during the early 1930s.
Soup Kitchens
Places that offered free or cheap food.
Breadlines
Lines of people waiting to receive food from charities, the government, soup kitchens, etc.
Great Depression
A period between 1929 to 1933 where the stock market fell. Poverty and unemployment were high.
Dust Bowl
A drought in the Great Plains (TX-ND) during the Great Depression. Ruined agriculture, made the price of food high.
Herbert Hoover
The 31st President. Tried to convince Americans that the US economy was going to improve. Response to the Great Depression was poor and told Americans to rely on themselves and get jobs.
What were the five causes of the Great Depression
Debt, Stock Market Crash, The “Black” Days, Agricultural Problems, Wealth Gap.
How was life in Shantytowns/Hoovervilles
Awful. Poverty, hunger, disease, fear, and anger were rampant.
How were white Americans and black Americans affected by the Great Depression.
Racism soared. White Americans were more likely to get aid and jobs. Black Americans had been living in a situation similar to the Great Depression for years.
How did the Great Depression impact people’s lives.
No jobs. Poor housing. Loss of goods. Thievery. Abandonment of families. Anger. Built communities. Racism Grew.
How did the credit during the 20s impact the Great Depression.
False prosperity. Banks suffered and didn’t give out loans. Debt from credit crippled the economy.
Why were President Hoover’s policies not effective
There were no jobs for Americans to built themselves up with or pull themselves out of the crisis.

A program with the objective to save capitalism and the citizens of the United States.
