Q

What is the median of the following set of numbers:

8 8 8 8 10 10 10 10 11 12 y

A

The median is the MIDDLE number in a given list of sequential numbers. If the list has an even number of listed units, average the middle two numbers to find the median. In this case 10 is the middle number, with five numbers above it and five numbers below it.

Q

What is the slope formula?

What information do you need to solve it?

A

m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

In order to solve the formula for the slope of a line, you will need the coordinates of two points on the line.

Q

The average (arithmetic mean) of 100 measurements is 23, the average of 50 additional measurements is 27.
Which is the greater quantity:
The avg. of the 150 measurements or 25?

A

25 : solution-
100 • 23 = 2,300 (total for first 100 measurements)
+
50 • 25 = 1,250 (total for 50 additional measurements)
=
3,550. Divide this new total of all measurements by the new total number of measurements taken (150) and you get 23.667, which is less than 25.

Q

What is the “range” of a set of numbers?

A

The range of a set is simply the difference between the greatest term and the least term.
In the set 4, 5, 5, 7, 10, 23, 67 the range is equal to 67 - 4 = 62. So the range is 62.

28
Q

How do you calculate “profit %”?

A

Profit is calculated as a percentage of the cost thus a 25% profit means you have earned back 25% of the cost of the item you are selling.
Example: $300 selling price 25% profit. Calculate cost. A: a 25% profit means 125% of the cost has been earned, thus: selling price = 1.25•cost. Thus: cost = selling price/1.25. Cost = 300/1.25. Cost is $240 and profit was $60.

29
Q

If your unit cost is $100, and you are selling each unit for a profit of 25%, what is your unit selling price?

A
Selling price = cost + profit.
profit = cost • percent profit
S = 100 + (100•0.25)
S = 100 + 25
S = 125
30
Q

What is an equilateral triangle?

A

All interior angle are 60 degrees and all sides are the same length.

31
Q

What kind of special right triangle is a triangle with side lengths 6, 8, 10?

A

It is a 3, 4, 5 triangle. Any triangle with legs of multiples of 3 and 4 and a hypotenuse of multiples of 5 is a 3, 4, 5 triangle triangle if they are all multiples of the base numbers using the same number, in this case 2.
Ex: 9, 12, 15 is the same but multiplied by 3.

32
Q

What kind of special right triangle is a triangle with side lengths 10, 24, 26?

A

It is a 5, 12, 13 triangle. Any triangle with legs of multiples of 5 and 12 and a hypotenuse of multiples of 13 is a 5, 12, 13 triangle if they are all multiples of the base numbers using the same number, in this case 2.
Ex: 15, 36, and 39 is the same but multiplied by 3.

33
Q

What are the side length ratios of a triangle with angles of 45, 45, and 90 degrees respectively?

A

1, 1, (square root)2

34
Q

What are the side length ratios of a triangle with angles of 30, 60, and 90 degrees respectively?

A

1, (square root)3, 2

35
Q

When an equilateral triangle is divided in half, what kind of triangle are you left with?

A

A 30, 60, 90 degree triangle with sides in ratio 1, (square root)3, 2

36
Q

Without using a calculator, what is the square root of 75?

A

Factor out 75 – 5 • 5 • 3. Pull out any set of two numbers and place one to represent the pair outside of the square root symbol. In this case we are left with 5•(square root)3.

37
Q

Simplify (square root)24 • (square root)6

A

This is the same as saying: take the square root of 6•24. 6•24=144. The square root of 144 = 12.

38
Q

What is the standard deviation?

A

Standard deviation refers to how far the numbers in a set are from one another. The closer to each other, the smaller the standard deviation; the further apart the numbers, the larger the standard deviation.

39
Q

How do you calculate the standard deviation?

A
  • Calculate the average of the set.
  • Determine the difference between each number and the average
  • Square these differences
  • Add the results and divide by the number of terms to determine the average
  • Take the square root of the average
40
Q

How do you calculate the probability that something WILL happen?

A

Number of desired outcomes/
number of possible outcomes
Ex: what is the probability of picking a female employee from a group of 25 employees, 14 of whom are women?
A: 14/25

41
Q

How do you calculate the probability that something will NOT happen?

A

= 1 - (probability will happen)

Ex: What is the probability that a female employee will not be picked out of a group of 25 employees, 14 of whom are women?
A: 1 - 14/25 = 11/25

42
Q

Altitude of a triangle?

A

The altitude of a triangle is a line segment through a vertex and perpendicular to a base (the opposite side of the triangle).
