Gravitational Fields Flashcards
State Newtons law of gravitation
any two point masses attract eachother with a gravitational force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of their separation
What is keplers 3rd law
relationship between orbital time period and orbital radius is given by T^2 ,,, r^3
Define a geostationary orbit
A satellite with a geostationary orbit around a planet will remain vertically above the same point on the equator of that planet at all times
Define a low polar orbit
A satellite in a low polar orbit passes above the north and south poles during each complete orbit
Define gravitational potential
the work done per unit mass to move a mass from infinity to that point
Define escape velocity
the minimum velocity required at the surface of a planet to escape its gravitational pull using its own kinetic energy
