Grape Variety and Rootstock Flashcards
Biological Diversity
the term given to the variety of life on earth; the variety within and between all species of plant, animals and micro organisms and the ecosystems within which they live and interact
Grapevine Variety
group of individuals with morphological and functional characteristics sufficiently homogeneous and different from those of other individuals (other groups of same species)
Cultivar
since ’50s it represents the acronym of ‘cultivated variety’
Clone
group of individuals genetically homogeneous because obtained by asexual propagation of single mother plant (cuttings)
Hybrid
obtained by natural or artificial crossing between two different genotypes (same variety, different varieties of same species, different species)
Varieties classification based on their diffusion
International (grown in different continents on important acreage ex. cab s.); national (relevant for specific country ex. sangiovese); regional (important at regional scale ex. nebbiolo); local (impacting on single-province economy ex. croatina); marginal (ex. ruché)
Two countries with biggest variety (covering 75% of area)
Italy and Portugal
