Nisseria meningitides - infxn and tx
meningococcal meningitis- with purport. Tx- vaccine for college kids, ceftriaxone + vancomycin
Moraxella catarrhalis- infxn and tx
symptoms common cold, otitis media, sinusitis, COPD exacerbation, nosocomial infxn in babies. Tx- amoxicillin-clavulanate, TMP/SMX
E. Coli- infections
traveler’s diarrhea, UTI, gastroenteritis (non-bloody), pneumonia, neonatal bacterial meningitis, intra-abd infection
E-coli- UTI tx
ciprofloxacin, TMP/SMX, or nitrofurantoin
E. Coli- meningitis, pneumonia, cholecystitis/ cholangitis tx
ceftriaxone
Klebsiella pneumoniae- infxn and tx
pneumonia in alcoholics, UTI in catheters. Tx pneumonia- IV ceftriaxone. Tx UTI- nitrofurantoin or TMP/SMX
Proteus mirabilis- infxn and tx
UTI in long term care facilities. Tx- ceftriaxone as mono therapy, + amino glycoside for complicated (think renal calculi- proteus produces ureas to form stones)
Shigella- infxn and tx
food poisoning, fecal-oral (high risk kids in daycare, HIV+, international travel, crowded living) Tx- prevent with hand wash, if need abx- cipro, TMP/SMX, or azithromycin
Salmonella- infxn and tx
gastroenteritis via contaminated food or water with animal feces, pet turtles. Tx- supportive care. Abx for age extremes- quinolone, ceftriaxone, or TMP/SMX
Campylobacter jejuni- infxn and tx
most common cause of community acquired inflammatory enteritis. Tx- rehydrate. Age extremes- cipro, Z-pack
H. Pylori- infxn and tx
duodenal ulcer, stomach ulcer. Tx- triple therapy: omeprazole, amoxicillin, clarithromycin
Pasteurella multocida- infxn and tx
dog/ cat bite infection. Tx- amoxicillin- clavulanate (2nd line- quinolone)
Bartonella henselae- infxn and tx
cat scratch fever. Tx- azithromycin, or TMP/SMX
Pseudomonas aeruginosa- infections
opportunistic- most common pathogen isolated from pt hospitalized >1wk. Malignant otitis external (elderly diabetic), puncture wound through rubber sole, hot tub folliculitis, pneumonia in CF patients, UTI
