Q

Factor 1 - JobCentre Plus (UK)

A

K - The JCP website is the busiest in the UK with 6 Million visits every day
A - This shows it is successful as it is clearly a vital resource for so many people and will be helping millions get some well-needed income.
K - 139,000 people are still unemployed in Scotland and offices are closing due to increasing website use.
A - This shows it is unsuccessful as some people either don’t know about it, or can’t use this service, and not having open high street branches around the country may be the main reason for this.

Q

Factor 2 - Furlough (UK)

A

K - 11.5 million jobs have been furloughed since 2020
A - This has been successful as it has saved millions of people from falling into unemployment and poverty during the Coronavirus pandemic
K - Furlough cost the Government £100 billion in total
A - This shows how it was unsuccessful as it was very expensive and this money will cost taxpayers for years and years to come.

Q

Factor 3 - Baby Box (Scotland)

A

K - In its first year (2017-18), 85% of parents applied for it.
A - This shows it was successful as it was clearly very popular and was going to provide the essentials for the millions of families who would otherwise not be able to afford it.
K - It costs the Government £9 million per year when the original budget was £6 million
A - This shows it was unsuccessful as it has become very expensive and many people argue it should be means-tested and just for the people who would otherwise not be able to afford the bare essentials.

Q

Factor 4 - Universal Credit (UK)

A

K - There is a five-week wait period before the recipient receives their first payment.
A - This shows it may be unsuccessful as recipients may not be able to pay their bills for the first 5 weeks and will potentially fall into debt.
K - 36% of universal credit claimants missed rent on the first week
A - This shows it is unsuccessful as many claimants can’t pay their bills and so could lead to them having huge financial trouble and maybe even eviction if they continue to miss payments.
