Glossary Flashcards
What is the definition of the word cell membrane?
A thin layer that encloses the cytosol. It keeps the cell together and gives it shape. It is in both animal and plant cells.
What is the definition of the word nucleus?
The control centre of the cell. It is in both plant and animal cell.
What is the denfinitio of the word cytosol?
The jelly like substance inside the cells. Contains many important substances such as glucose. In both plant and animal cells.
What is the definition of the word cell wall?
Tough covering around plant cells. Gives plant cells strength and holds them in shape.
What is the definition of the word chloroplasts?
Are the oval shaped organelles in plant cells, uses energy from the sun to make food.
What is the definition of the word vacuole?
The organelle in the plant cell, that can look like an empty bubble. Used to store water and dissolved substances.
What is the definition of the word photosynthesis?
The chemical reaction by which green plants capture energy from the sun. Without this reaction, life on earth could not exist. Photosynthesis is also in chloroplasts.
What is the definition of the word Mitochondria?
It is the energy making power house of the cell. There is more in an animal cell because plants do not move or maintain constant internal temperature.
What is the definition of the word prokaryote?
The simplest and most ancient type of cells, small and simple. The word pro means before and the word Kray means nucleus, so before nucleus (no nucleus). Singled celled.
What is the definition of the word eukaryote?
This evolves from the prokaryote. It is larger and more complex. Eu means true and the word Kray means nucleus so it means true nucleus. Eukaryote has nucleus and contains more organelles.
What does pro mean?
Before
What does eu mean?
