Q

What is the greenhouse effect?

A

The greenhouse effect is a natural mechanism that raises the temperature of the Earth’s surface. The absorbed energy heats the Earth’s atmosphere and surface. This mechanism keeps the Earth’s temperature roughly 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would be otherwise, allowing life to exist on the planet.

Q

What is the difference between the natural and enhanced greenhouse effect?

A

The lower atmosphere is expected to warm, causing weather and climate to change. As a result, the augmented greenhouse effect is added to the natural greenhouse effect.

Q

Describe the water and carbon cycles.

A

The carbon cycle transports atmospheric carbon into plants, and therefore into creatures that consume plants. Water contains the elements required by plants to perform photosynthesis and eliminate carbon dioxide.
