Glands And Appendages Flashcards

1
Q

Where might apocrine and holocrine secreting ducts be found?

A

Q

What are the secretions of serous and mucous cells?

A

Serous- Watery fluid rich in ions and glycoproteins.

Mucous- Viscous fluid containing mucinogens.

Q

What is the purpose of myoepithelial cells? Where do they exist?

A

To contract so cells of the gland secrete their material.

They reside between the PM of the epithelial cell and the basal lamina.

Q

What are the connections holding myoepithelial cells in place?

A

Desmosomes with each other and hemidesmosomes with the basal lamina via keratin intermediate filaments.

Q

Why do myoepithelial cells stain highly eosinophilic?

A

Due to high concentration of acting, that works along with myosin to cause contraction.

Q

Describe duct morphology from smallest to largest.

A

Intercalated exist between each secretory unit, and join into intralobule ducts between lobules as striated ducts (eosinophilic basal striations, exist in salivary glands) or ordinary intralobular ducts. Intralobular ducts then join to form interlobular within the septa between lobules (epithelium may become columnar and likely stratified), which finally form interlobar ducts as the main duct for the gland.

Q

What are the two unique structures often associated with hair follicles?

A

Arrestor pili muscles (smooth muscle, are an eosinophilic ovoid collection of cells typically neighboring the sebaceous gland) and sebaceous glands.

Q

Where do sebaceous glands reside? What do they secrete?

A

In thin skin as it is vellous, where they secrete sebum (cellular debris and oil that coats hair/skin and has antibacterial function) into hair follicles in a holocrine fashion.

Q

Where do eccrine sweat glands reside?

A

They reside across the entire body barring the lips and genitalia. Secretion is watery and meant to cool via evaporative cooling.

Q

What type of duct does an apocrine sweat gland have? Where are they located?

Located in areola, nipple, perianal region, and genitalia.

Q

What is the secretion of apocrine sweat glands, and in what fashion is it secreted?

A

Glycoproteins, ammonia, and lipids. It is odorless at first, but is metabolized by skin bacteria to become malodorous.
Secretion is in a merocrine fashion.

Q

What are the varying cells of the eccrine sweat gland?

A

Dark- Secrete glycoproteins, have a lot of rER and secretory granules.
Light- Secrete watery component, are rich in glycogen and pump ions.
Myoepithelial cells
