Girdles Flashcards
What skeleton are the girdles part of?
They are the part of the appendicular skeleton that anchors the appendages to the axial skeleton.
What are the 2 types of girdles?
The pectoral girdle and the pelvic girdle.
What is the pectoral girdle?
They are to the upper limbs, also known as the shoulder girdle. 2 bones that connect each arm to the axial skeleton: scapula bones and clavicle bones.
What are the clavicle bones?
They are 2 s-shaped bones that braces the scapula against the sternum to let arm hang freely. Also known as collar bone. Attaches to scapula and manubrium. Clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone in children.
What are the scapula bones?
Large triangular bones located on the posterior side of your upper back. Also known as shoulder blade. Connects the humerus to the axial skeleton with muscles and ligaments. Very rare bone to break.
What is the pelvic girdle?
Also known as the “ox coxae”, it is made up of the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
What is the ilium?
It is the upper, flared area of the pelvis.
What is the ischium?
It is the lower, outer ring (the bone you sit on).
What is the pubis?
It is the lower, flat area.
What is the part below your coccyx?
Pubic symphysis (cartilaginous)
What type of joint is the sacrum to the ilium?
Sacral iliac joint (fibrous).
What is the name of the area where the femur joins in the hip?
Acetabulum.
What are some features of the male pelvis?
More narrow and taller, Less of a sacral curve, smaller pelvic inlet, pelvic arch less than 90 degrees.
What are some features of the female pelvis?
Wider, more of a sacral curve, larger pelvic inlet, pubic arch greater than 90 degrees.
