Periodic paralysis
A
Periodic paralysis (PP)
- Characterized by episodes of painless muscle weakness
- May be precipitated by heavy exercise, fasting, or high-carbohydrate meals (often associated with an increased release of epinephrine or insulin)
- Attacks occur suddenly with generalized weakness. Consciousness is preserved and bulbar and respiratory muscles are only mildly affected, if at all.
