gg Flashcards
What is an important safety issue to keep in mind when approaching an uncontrolled airport?
There may be aircraft flying NORDO.
In an MF, they may have called ahead to get permission. At an ATF they can just be flying around unchecked.
What are the two types of frequencies you will encounter at uncontrolled airports?
MF and ATF
A mandatory frequency can be at an uncontrolled airport or a controlled airport where the tower has closed. What must pilots do on an MF?
They must report their position, indicate their intentions, and monitor the frequency while operating withing the MF area.
When a Class C or D towered airport closes, it becomes…?
A Class E MF area.
An ATF will usually have a ground station with a UNICOM. What do/can these ground stations usually do/provide?
Like Debert. Fuel planes, dispatches, ties planes down, says hey etc.
They can give you weather an traffic info but they are not trained on how to do so. The information is helpful, but not certified.
If an ATF does not have a ground station what will the ATF frequency be?
123.2
If an ATF has a frequence of something other than 123.2, what does this tell us?
That there is likely a ground station with an actual person that may be able to give me some basic, uncertified, weather and traffic info
What are the only two ways to join the circuit at an uncontrolled airport?
1) Straight in downwind at circuit height
2) Cross over field from upwind side at circuit height (including the double cross method)
When flying in uncontrolled airspace, position reports should be broadcast on 126.7 and should be made over all…
…NAVAIDs along the route of flight to the nearest station having air-ground communications capability
What is the VFR Position Report format?
Ident

(This is in the back of the CFS as well)
What is an FIC?
Flight Information Center.
There are 8 in Canada (Halifax, Quebec City, London, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kamloops, Whitehorse).
They provide pilots with enhanced access to higher quality flight information. FICs centralize those flight information services that are not location dependent, such as en-route advisory services, weather and preflight briefings, flight planning, and related services.
FICs provide 24 hour flight planning and weather briefing services (1-866-WX-BRIEF) across the country.
Pilots can maintain contact with the FIC throughout the flight and close flight plans with their chosen FIC by radio once landed. Pilots can therefore conduct an entire flight by dealing with one FIC as opposed to several FSS along their route.
What is FISE and who gives it?
Flight Information En-Route is given to you by an FIC (Flight Information Center) and includes weather reports, forcasts, NOTAMS, PIREPS, altimeter settings, and other operational info pertinent to the en-route phase of flight
A FISE may be reachable on 126.7 but because 126.7 got too congested, what is now important to remember?
That many areas on 126.7 are broadcast only (you will not receive a response if you try to call on it). You might have to call up another frequency for FISE or to give your position report. On a map it would look like this
When asked to orbit or hold by ATC, what are the general rules?
Remain within 2 NM of the call-up/checkpoint
Left turns are recommended in a hold (for visibility)
Where are Call-up/checkpoints published?
In the CFS and on VTA charts
