Geo- weather Flashcards
weather
day to day changes in atmosphere
climate
overall pattern of weather, usually based on an average over 30 years
weather station
place where the elements of weather are measure, recorded
Stevenson screen
its a weather station that measures local weather conditions
what does the Stevenson screen measure (8)
-rainfall
-humidity
-air pressure
-temperature
-cloud cover
-wind direction
-wind velocity
-sunshine
characteristics of the Stevenson screen and why (7)
- it is a wooden box standing on 4 legs
-double boarded roof- prevents sun heat from reaching inside
-slatted sides- allow free entry of air and movement inside
-1.2m above ground- not influenced by heat of surface
-white walls reflects sun rays - places on grass covered surface- to reduce radiation from ground
-away from buildings and trees- so it dosent absorb heat atmosphere, and block precipitation and wind
six’s thermometer, max-min thermometer
measures and units
measures- daily maximum and minimum temps
units- degrees Celsius
maximum thermometer
- when temps rise, the mercury expands and pushes the index along the tube
- even if temps fall the index stays at the maximum
-resulted are then obtained by reading the scale where the index is - index is then down back by a magnet to measure next readings
minimum thermometer
- when temps fall, alcohol contract and its meniscus pulls the index along tube
-results are obtained by reading scale where index is
rain gauge
measures and units
measures- rainfall
units- mm
components, what does the rain gauge consist of 3
- cylinder in which there is collecting can containing glass or plastic jar
- it contains a funnel that fits in the top of the container
- rain falls over funnel, collected in the jar
precautions for the rain gauge 2
-check everyday incase of dew accumulating, leading to false readings
-measure same time everyday and eye level
factors of placement: rain gauge 3
- open space and flat surfaces to avoid runoff from obstacles entering
- 30cm above ground the funnel- avoid splashes from entering
-sunk into ground or surrounded by bricks to avoid them being knocked over, there is stability, avoid evaporation do to sun heat
