Genetics Flashcards
Homozygous
having 2 identical alleles for a particular characteristic
Dominant Allele
An allele that has an effect in both heterozygous and homozygous conditions
genotype
The genes/alleles that an organism posseses
Recessive Allele
an allele which only has an effect in the homozygous condition
Recessive Allele
an allele which only has an effect in the homozygous condition
Phenotype
An organisms outward appearance/characteristics
Heterezyogous
Having 2 different alleles for a particular characteristics
Alleles
Different forms of the same gene
Homozygous recessive
having 2 of the same identical recessive alleles
Homozygous dominant
having 2 of the same identical dominant alleles
Homologous pairs
a pair of chromosomes that have the same genes at the same loci, but alleles could be different.
Or
The chromosomes in a homologous pair each have the same genes in the same order, but there may be variation between them, resulting in different alleles.
Expressed
gene is switched on, the protein is made and the characteristic/trait is seen/present in the phenotype
Pure breeding
Organism is homozygous and can only pass 1 type of allele to its offspring
