Since the origin of life on earth, behaviour and physiology have been shaped by the rotation of our planet around its axis. As a result a biological circadian timing system evolved that enabled organisms to anticipate daily environmental changes rather than just reacting to them.Accordingly, circadian timing systems enabled organisms to anticipate daily changes in temperature, radiation, and food availability resulting from the movement of our planet, have an (evolutionary) advantage over organisms in which the circadian clock was removed and cannot predict these changes (Woelfe et al., 2004)
